Some suggested programmes -

For Senior Management – “The Assertive Manager” programme

When schools have undertaken training in a whole school approach to Behaviour Management (e.g. such as Assertive Discipline) they will have made a major investment in the professional development of staff to promote positive behaviour. However this is by no means the end of the story - indeed in school development terms we are still at the early stages of the project. The investment you have made in introducing and setting up your system now needs to be safeguarded through appropriate monitoring and supervision procedures in order to provide quality control and to maintain good professional practice.  Assertive performance management involves the dovetailing of personal and professional resources with organisational systems in order to provide a clear and positive lead to staff.

Who will benefit from this course?

This programme will benefit all senior members of staff who have some role to play in the management, monitoring and leadership of professional skills development in your school.  Also, as they face the challenges of ‘Performance Management’, middle managers, heads of department, curriculum leaders will need this training.  Taking as its focus the management and leadership of your school’s Discipline Policy or Behaviour Plan, this programme shows you how to identify more clearly -

  • what you are meant to be managing, (identifying the tasks to be accomplished)
  • who you are meant to be managing, (and do they know or agree to this?)
  • how you will achieve these tasks, (the personal and professional skills required)
  • when these tasks will be completed, (time scales for professional development).
  • how your own performance as a manager measures up to this.

You will have the opportunity to complete (in confidence) some psychometric tests of leadership and management style to give you a picture of your own personal preferences. Is your preferred style to lead from the front, or to merge with the crowd (are you a ‘teller’ or a ‘joiner’)? How assertive are you as a person in private, and as a leader in school?

We will consider the use of School Improvement Planning and Continuing Professional Development to set targets for change. What time scales have you established for achieving these targets with staff? What monitoring arrangements are in place? Often our Behaviour Plans need more structure than most in order to support the process of change in the school. Professional factors – We will consider how tasks and people can be managed assertively, getting into win-win situations, and avoiding unproductive blame and recrimination. The programme will show how the principles of “Assertive Discipline” in the classroom can be applied in a positive and creative way to your leadership role with your staff. We will look at the role of leader as coach rather than as judge!

And for Behaviour Support or Educational Psychologists, take the opportunity to complete the New Assertive Discipline® Master Class

Children have changed and we must change with them. Assertive Discipline® has evolved into a powerful tool for managing the diverse classroom, integrating the management of behaviour with the management of learning for today’s pupils.  The important additional concepts that this programme now includes are therefore -   ‘social mediation’ for today’s pupils; what it is and how to use it

  • the 3 faces of assertiveness and 3 styles of discipline in today’s schools
  • how to establish the “The 3 R’s of Behaviour” within the classroom
  • flexible classroom planning
  • the stages of  telling, teaching, coaching, and empowering with pupils
  • the 3 steps to improve pupil behaviour in the classroom.

In this updated version of Assertive Discipline, the behaviour strategy now becomes a dynamic process for teaching all children the basic social rules of responsible behaviour. It goes beyond behaviour management to the more creative concept of behaviour education™, in which teachers don’t just teach interpersonal skills but also coach them through a process where curriculum and behaviour are intrinsically linked, and where the teaching and coaching of responsible behaviour identifies and teaches a repertoire of learning behaviours, and coaches their development through the use of supportive and corrective feedback.

Who will benefit from this course?

Behaviour Support, Educational Psychologists, and those teachers wishing to support colleagues within the learning environment.

What will you learn? On this programme you will learn how to

  •  identify the behaviour management styles or preferences of teachers
  • carry out a Behaviour Audit using the “3 R’s of Behaviour”
  • select from the “3 Faces of Assertiveness” the approach needed for different situations
  • structure lessons by using clearer activity directions, establishing routines for commonly occurring activity transitions within the lesson
  • develop a teaching strategy to integrate the management of behaviour with the management of curriculum – “the 3 Step Method”
