Coping with KidsŪ
Coping With Kids® is the UK version of the Assertive Discipline® for Parents programme which was developed in the USA over 20 years ago by Lee and Marlene Canter. It is a proven step by step approach to solving everyday behaviour problems. We offer this programme for professionals working to support parents. We normally run this as a one day 'Train the Trainers' course.
Coping With Kids has been carefully developed as a programme to teach any parent a set of skills for dealing positively with their child’s inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour. Over the past couple of years within the UK we have developed a strong focus on teaching responsible behaviour within the Coping With Kids and Assertive Discipline® for Schools programmes. This idea of teaching children the behaviours they need in order to succeed within the home, community or school setting is at the core of these programmes.
Our experience from hundreds of parent workshops is that parents rarely drop out of Coping With Kids training. The programme has been developed for delivery in a relaxed atmosphere and leaders are given lots of ideas about creating the right kind of atmosphere, making the most of peer support and using incentives for parent attendance.
The emphasis is on the development of practical skills at a manageable pace. There is not a heavy emphasis on theory although, of course, the programme has strong theoretical underpinnings and parents who wish to can do more in- depth reading. All parents and carers, regardless of their educational and social background, are able to learn from the workshops and to put skills into practice from day one.
To 'back-up' this programme we have developed some highly user-friendly resources - the Parent Resource Guide and Assertive Discipline for Parents.
We also provide parent training directly for community-based projects. Click here to see an example of a current Coping with Kids project.
