Our "Succeeding with Difficult Students" programme is run as a 2-day course to provide you with the knowledge and skills to train others in this approach to problem behaviour. "Succeeding with Difficult Students" takes you beyond Assertive Discipline® to meet the increasing demands of the disaffected and disruptive pupils in our schools.  Issues we face are how to build positive relationships and create trust; how to manage angry confrontations; how to identify the "mistaken goals" of our difficult students and as a result how to develop plans to differentiate our behaviour management within the classroom.

On this "training the trainers" programme we look at how teachers can support each other with the task of managing pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties in our schools. Although focusing on mainstream secondary pupils this programme has been found useful for primary and for special school teachers as well. The key components of the 2 day programme include -

  • building positive relationships with hard-to-reach pupils
  • diagnosing the 4 types of difficult students by identifying their 'mistaken goals' (seeking attention, avoidance, power or revenge)
  • developing an individualised plan for each pupil on the basis of this diagnosis
  • setting up positive one-to-one meetings with difficult pupils
  • creating an inclusion plan for each pupil within the regular classroom
  • tackling the 'class from hell', using collegiate support

This trainers programme is ideally suited for behaviour consultants, senior and middle managers, pastoral and guidance staff within your school, and for behaviour support teachers and educational psychologist in local authorities.

The Succeeding with Difficult Students programme can also be delivered to a whole staff on a one day basis.

We have also produced a UK version Succeeding with Difficult Students training video to help schools cope with issues of social inclusion and problems of managing pupils with social and emotional difficulties in the mainstream school.

Although it derives from the pioneering work of Lee Canter in this area, the programme is an entirely UK version, presented by John Bayley and Geoff Moss.

The video follows the loose narrative of an overwhelmed teacher "Mr Smith" as he works his way from chaos in his classroom to a state where he has created a respectful role for himself, established some routines, and built up more positive relationships with his disaffected pupils.  Although it follows this storyline, each of the 11 sections can be used independently as the focus of training in the topic.

The programme explains how to differentiate between difficult students in terms of their motivation or 'mistaken goals'. It shows how to identify those mistaken goals and how to create individual plans for different types of difficult students.

It shows how to set up and run successful meetings with those students and how to integrate their management into the general management of the whole class.

The 11 sections of this video programme are:

  • Reprise of Assertive Discipline
  • Action and Reaction
  • Building Trust
  • Different Behaviour Patterns
  • One-to-One Meetings
  • Teaching Appropriate Behaviour
  • Psychology of Anger
  • Teaching and Re-teaching the Plan
  • Differentiating in the Classroom
  • Collegiacy
  • Putting it Together
